Laser Engraving
Laser engraving is an automated process where a laser beam is used to etch into the surface of the material. This creates high-contrast marking that is durable and readable in a variety of conditions. Unlike other marking methods, such as inkjet marking, the laser mark is permanent and does not wash off with exposure to heat or chemicals. This makes it ideal for product identification and traceability.
Different materials react differently to laser engraving. Natural stone, for example, has unique properties that impact the quality and consistency of laser marks. For instance, granite and marble are softer and more dense than other stones, and their density affects the way they absorb laser energy. This can result in a more even or deeper mark on the material.
Acrylic is another material that is commonly laser engraved. To achieve a white, frosted look on acrylic, we recommend using a Kern S-FOCUS optic assembly with a wide nozzle option. This will allow the assist air to be dispersed across the entire engraving area, decreasing fogging or shadowing.
Laser engraving machines are specifically designed to cut, etch and mark hard materials automatically by utilizing computer software. Once the engraving design is keyed into the software, it’s placed in the laser tray and the machine is activated to begin the process. Engravers typically require a hood or other form of ventilation during operation because the laser produces dust and fumes during cutting and etching. These byproducts can be harmful if inhaled, so it’s important to have proper ventilation.
